One of the most polarizing cars amongst my local car loving friends is the Alfa Spider. I don't even understand it and can never get a definitive why. Usually there is talk about no power, engine "sounds like shit" (someone actually said that), handles poorly, UGLY. I disagree on all points. One will drive by and half my buddies are are retching. The other half are like damn, love it. So what have you OPPO, love it, hate it, or somewhere in the middle?

It's not necessarily the Alfa for me, and I find myself in the Alfisti minority by preferring the S4s to the earlier Spiders, but I don't understand what there is to hate.

I LOVE it, it's the PERFECT spider/cabrio/roadster if you ask me. I'd much rather have a Spider than a Miata (yeah, I went there).
No power? Have they even BEEN in one? Sounds like shit? Uhm, it's an Alfa dude, they NEVER sound like shit.. blablabla..
I'll have mine in BRG or Dark grey metallic please :)

I'm not a fan of that particular iteration. However I don't even like the Osso di Seppia long tail version. My personal favourite would be a 2000 Spider Veloce Coda Tronca, circa 1970 vintage, in black with a nice set of Cromodora five spokes...

The Alfa spider is a slightly-less-reliable (Injected ones are really quite dependable), more comfortable (really, they're GREAT!), more Italian Miata. And the answer is always Miata.

my point exactly. The S4 is dead reliable. And these jokers are Miata fanbois too

I like em. I almost bought a Quadrifoligo last year but decided against draining my bank account for another project to sit with the other amassing projects I already have.
I am a huge fan of the Duetto. The back end really makes it.

I'd define myself as someone who's quite prone to liking Alfa's. But I've never quite understood the spider. It does look rather good and I like what it stands for, but -IMHO- it went through too many revamps and ended up looking like an old-made-new car. Which it was.
But to say it doesn't sound good? Hell no!
(I must say that I like the GTV 916, so I have weird tastes)

Biased as an Alfisti, but I rather like them. Wouldn't be my Alfa of choice, but I still smile whenever I see one :)
If I had an S4 rather than a Duetto, I reckon I'd give it socking great box-flares and a decent sized turbo :) maybe a transaxle as well
Monster Spider. I'd call it Shelob.

I have an S2 and I love it. Could I say that is had been "reliable" in the few months I've owned it? No, not really. Its been in the shop for the past month but that's only because I'm getting most everything mechanical serviced. When I get it back I know it'll be reliable. It's amazingly fun to drive as well, and I love how the engine sounds. Granted Mine only has one of the normal two mufflers on it so It can sound a bit loud and borderline rice-y at times.
